The Roadrunners closed out their 2011-2012 season on a high note with a hard fought overtime road win 72-68 vs the College of the Siskiyous. Behind 29-17 late in the first half the Runners closed the deficit to 32-35 by halftime. In the second half there were several lead changes until the Runners missed a desperation shot to win the contest at the end of regulation. In overtime the Runners were able to get the “handle” and secure the win. The Roadrunners were led in scoring by Eural Black with 17 points, followed by Maazin Butler and Tearence Edwards with 16 and 13 points respectfully. With this final win the Roadrunners finished the tough 2012 Golden Valley Conference with a 7-3 record and a tie for second place one game behind conference champion, Feather River. Overall the Roadrunners finished 13-10 and barely missed another opportunity to compete in the California State Championship. Despite this disappointment the Roadrunners won 9 of their last 13 games and were playing their best ball of the season. Well Done!

Butte College 72 (5-3) (11-11) @ College of the Redwoods 63 (2-7) (7-16)

Succeeding in the next game after a devastating loss is a test for any team and the Roadrunners passed with flying colors displaying the character, determination, and pride necessary and winning a tough road game at the College of the Redwoods 72-63.Tied at 14 the Roadrunners went on a solid run to forge a 28-22 halftime lead over the Corsairs and never looked back. In the second half the Runners held off several of Redwood’s runs to close the deficit but each time the Roadrunners had an answer and eventually closed the door with a late game run and a 69-56 advantage. The Runners were led in scoring by Maazin Butler with 25 points, followed by Tearence Edwards and Eural Black with 15 and 10 points respectively. A slim mathematical chance remains for a share of the GVC title if both Feather River and Shasta College each lose their last remaining game and the Runners win their last two. The Runners return home this week for a contest against Lassen College before finishing their season at College of the Siskiyous Friday, Feb.17

Butte College 60 (4-3) (10-11) @ Shasta 65 (6-2) (11-11) Double Overtime

Free throws have been anything but “free” for the Roadrunners this season. In fact they have been very costly as the Runners went 8-22 from the “charity stripe and let a huge conference game slip out of their hands in a 60-65 double overtime loss at Shasta College. This devastating loss put the Runners in a tough position to have any chance for another GVC title. Leading almost the entire game in regulation the Runners missed three critical charity tosses in the last 23 seconds of the contest which sent the game into overtime. Both teams had opportunities to win the game in the first overtime with the Runners missing a last second shot to win it thus forcing a second overtime. Down 53-60 with just over a minute left in the second overtime the Roadrunners staged a furious comeback only to miss a lay-up to tie the game at 62 all. The Roadrunners were led in scoring by Maazin Butler with 15 points.

Butte College 50 (1-2) (7-10) vs Shasta College 55 (3-1) (8-10)

With the game vs Siskiyous cancelled due to bad weather on Wednesday Jan 18th the Roadrunners played only their third game in the last four weeks and their inconsistent play continued against the Shasta College Knights. The Runners lost a hard fought home game in the last minute to their rivals 55-50. Leading 48-47 with under two minutes remaining the Runners were unable to execute at either end of the floor during “crunch time” and endured a tough home and league setback. Trailing 20-23 at halftime the Roadrunners fought back to take several short –lived leads only to see the Shasta Knights bounce back themselves and eventually take a 47-41 lead with 6 minutes remaining. The Runners then put a solid combination of offensive and defensive series together to regain the lead at 48 -47 but couldn’t maintain their good play enough to secure the win. Leading the Runners in scoring were Tearence Edwards and Maazin Butler with 14 and 12 points respectively while Masson Prowse had a game high 8 rebounds. The Roadrunners return to action on the road at Lassen this Wednesday , January 25th.

Butte College (1-1,7-9) 72 vs Redwoods (1-1) ( (6-12) OT!

Butte College found a way to even their conference record at 1-1 with a hard fought overtime victory over Redwoods College 72-68. A game that saw numerous lead changes and huge swings was exciting from start to finish. The Roadrunners started of playing very well to build an early 18-7 lead only to see the Corsairs come storming back to take a 35-28 halftime. The Runners execute well at both ends to erase an early 11 point second half deficit and run off an 18-1 surge and take a 48-41 lead with under ten minutes to play. However, once again the Corsairs fought back and had the lead at 62-60 with 38 seconds remaining. Following a Roadrunner timeout Aaron Dalton found Tearence Edwards with a beautiful feed that tied the game at 62 and sent it into overtime! In overtime the Runners were able to get the upper hand and hold on for the 72-68 win. The Roadrunners did a great job on the boards out rebounding the Corsairs 55-26 with 11 put-back scores! Four Runners, Black (10), Prowse (14), Rolls-Tyson (10), and Swaim (11) each recorded double didgit rebounds! Next up for the Runners will be at the College of the Siskiyous Wednesday!

Butte College (0-1,6-9) 42 vs Feather River ( 1-0,9-8) 70

Butte College opened defense of its 2011 Golden Valley title and played their worst game of the year losing at Feather River 42-70. The Runners, who were coming off of a huge win over Bakersfield at the Allan Hancock Tourney the week before, found it served as no help as they opened the game shooting 1-18 and fell behind 18-2 over the first ten minutes of the game. After closing the gap to 18-28 with 3:40 to go in the first half the Runners were outscored 11-0 the rest of the way to trail at halftime 18-39. Feather River burned the Runner’s defense from the 3 point line all game connecting for 11 trifectas and was never threatened in the second half. The Runners struggled all night from the floor and the charity stripe despite securing a season high 19 offensive rebounds! The Runners were led in scoring by Mycal Swaim’s 12points and Eural Black’s 8 points! The Roadrunners return to action this Friday at home against College of the Redwoods at 7:30PM.

Allan Hancock College Tournament: December 28-30, 2011

This tournament provided a great opportunity for the Roadrunners to finish their non-conference schedule on a high note before heading into league Jan. 7th against the league favorite Feather River on the road, and they Runners took advantage of it! Opening with Santa Barbara College in the first game the Runners played well and held on for a hard fought 60-54 win which put them in the semi-finals vs the “tourney host”, Allan Hancock College. After a hard fought first half that saw the Runners down 25-27 they had a tough start to the second half falling behind by 12 before cutting the deficit to 48-52 with two minutes left and possession of the ball but could get no closer and fell 52-58. In the third place game the Runners played their most complete defensive game of the season with a 55-41 throttling of an athletic Bakersfield College fresh off an upset win over highly state-ranked Fresno City College in the tourney’s first round! Several players had good performances throughout the tourney led by All-Tourney selection Maazin Butler, Mycal Swaim, Eural Black, and Masson Prowse! The Runners finished their non-conference schedule at 6-8 playing solid basketball.

San Joaquin Delta College Tournament: December 16-18,2011

After an eleven day layoff the Roadrunners returned to action against an always formidable field at the San Joaquin Delta Tournament and fell upon some tough times winning one and losing two games before going into their Christmas break. The Runners had their worst performance of the season losing to a tough Sierra College team 55-70. The next day the Roadrunners bounced back with better play against Merced College winning 61-40 and putting themselves into the consolation championship vs Napa College. The third game in three days of any tournament is always tough both mentally and physically and it proved to be for the Runners as they dropped a hard fought 47-59 game to the Storm! The Runners take an overall 4-7 record into the Christmas break returning to the hardwoods at the Allan Hancock Tourney Dec. 28-30 where they open with Santa Barbara College in the first round. The Runners are hoping this short break for the holidays will be some good medicine and help them get back to their winning ways as they prepare for conference in January! Here’s a recap of the tournament:

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18TH: Butte College 47 (4-7) Napa College 59

The Roadrunners played hard and competed but failed to execute enough at both ends and played from behind the entire game against a solid Napa Storm team. Despite scoring three more field goals than their opponents as they were decimated by the Storm’s superior three point shooting that 10 to 1 and additionally outscore the Runners 13 to 6 from the foul line! With 7 minutes tio go the Runners had closed the gap to 35-40 but could get no closer! Masson Prowse had a solid game with 15 points followed by Maazin Butler with 9 and Josh Rolls-Tyson with 7.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17TH: Butte College 61 (4-6) Merced College 40

The Roadrunners overcame an early 11-18 deficit to forge ahead 34-30 at halftime. Coming out strong defensively in the second half they held Merced to 0nly 8 second half points while scoring 27 points themselves to earn a well deserved victory 61-40. The Runners had a very balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures. The 40 points allowed was the lowest total to date the Runners have given up in a single game!

FRIDAY,DECMEBER,16TH: Butte College 55 (3-7) Sierra College 70

Sierra College came out of the gates firing on all cylinders at both ends and ran away and hid from the Runners. Down 22-42 at halftime the Roadrunners battled back to 49-60 with ten minutes remaining but could not threaten anymore and eventually fell to Sierra 55-70. Sierra was simply the better team on this day! The Runners were led in scoring by Maazin Butler and Eural Black.

Cabrillo College Tournament: December 2-3, 2011

The Roadrunners had another good weekend of solid play that saw them defeat Canada College in the tournament opener 72-64 only to lose the next evening in the championship game in overtime to an outstanding Cabrillo College squad 66-69. Throughout the tourney the Runners did a good job on the glass and defended well. Maazin Butler and Tyler Randolph each played exceptionally well and earned all-tournament awards. The Roadrunners (3-5) , and winners of 3 of their last four games, will take this week off to concentrate on their upcoming finals and resume play in the San Joaquin Delta College Tourney December 16th at 2PM against a very talented Sierra College team.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3RD: Butte College 66 (3-5) Cabrillo College 69 (OT)

For the first time this season the Runners found themselves in a tournament final against a very talented and sound Cabrillo College(6-1) team. From the outset the Runners let the Hawks know they were in a dog fight with the visitors from Chico! The Roadrunners mixed in some solid play at both ends to earn a tough 31-24 halftime lead. Midway through the second half the Hawks fought back to take a 51-46 lead only to see the Runners come storming back to tie the game at 56 and miss a desperation heave to win the game in regulation. The Hawks jumped out to a 61-56 lead in overtime but once again the Roadrunners staged a furious rally to close the gap to 66-67 on a Randolph 3 pointer. The hawks made two final free throws to push their lead to 3 and the Runners , despite getting a great look to tie the game fell 66-69. This loss marked the fifth straight time they have lost a tight game in the last minute of play! The Runners were led in scoring by Randolph and Roll-Tyson with 20 points each.

FRIDAY,DECEMBER 2ND : Butte College 72 (3-4) Canada College 64

The Roadrunners found themselves behind 7-0 early to a very scrappy Canada squad before getting on track and eventually producing a 34-26 halftime lead. Canada pulled within 4 points at 51-47 with ten minutes remaining before the Runners were able to push the lead out to 57-46 and put the game away down the stretch finally with some clutch free throw shooting. The Runners were led in scoring by Butler (14), Eural Black and Tyler Randolph (11), and Josh Rolls-Tyson with 10.

5th ANNUAL RAY MORGAN COMPANY / REICH COMPANY CLASSIC; 11/25-26/2011

The Roadrunners had a very solid weekend in the 5th Annual Ray Morgan Company / Reich Company Classic proving there is no place like home to start to get well! The Runners returned to Cowan Gymnasium and secured two solid victories over Marin College and Alameda College. There was a good turnout to see the Runners play and they didn’t disappoint their fans by playing winning basketball for two straight days. This week the Runners travel to the Cabrillo College Classic where they open up with Canada College , Friday , December 2nd. Below is a recap of this past weekend’s games.

SATURDAY,NOVEMBER 26TH :

Butte College 64 ( 2-4 )- Alameda College 54

The Roadrunners got off to a great start against Alameda and played their best half of the season thus far and left the floor at halftime leading 34-22. The Runners did a solid job of handling Alameda’s full-court presses and half-court zones throughout the contest. However, with five minutes remaining Alameda had regained the lead 51-50 only to see the Roadrunners regroup and finish the game off on a 14-3 run to secure their second victory of the year! The Runners did another great job at both ends down the stretch to secure the win. The Roadrunners had a balanced scoring attack led by four Runners scoring double figures: Maazin Butler led the way with 14 points, followed by Eural Black and Masson Prowse with 11 each, and Tearance Edwards with 10.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25TH:

Butte College 59 (1-4)- Marin College 52

The Roadrunners showed some “true grit” coming back from a 12 point deficit with 7 minutes to play and overtaking a vastly improved Marin team. Trailing 29-41 the Runners reeled off a 15-0 run to put themselves in the lead for good and earn their first victory of the season. This 30-11 run over the last 7 minutes was a good sign of the execution at both ends needed to win a close game after failing to do so during the first four games of this season. Trailing at half for the first time (22-23) the Runners outscored Marin 37-22 in the second half. The Roadrunners were led once again in scoring by Maazin Butler (20) who played perhaps his best game overall this young season. Eural Black followed him in scoring with 14.

MENDOCINO COLLEGE TOURNAMENT: 11/17-19/2011

Butte College 67 (0-3) - Mendocino College 71: Thursday, November 17, 2011

At full strength for the first time the Roadrunners played very well against a talented Mendo team and saw a 40-38 halftime lead turn into a 47-61 deficit halfway through the second half. However, the Runners played strong down the stretch to pull even at 64 with the ball and a chance to take the lead against the host Eagles only to fall short again in the last minute 71-67. The Roadrunners were led in scoring by Maazin Butler (19), Tearance Edwards (17), and Josh Rolls-Tyson with 11. It was a good showing for the Runners but once again they were denied victory.

Butte College 62 (0-4) –Cuesta College 67: Friday, November 18,2011

For the fourth game in a row the Roadrunners lost in the final minute of a fiercely competitive contest against Cuesta College out of San Louis Obispo, CA. With 4 and a half minutes remaining the roadrunners clung to a 59-51 lead only to see it slip away down the stretch once more. Down 60-62 with 20 seconds left, the Runners failed to capitalize on two free throws to tie the game and eventually fell 62-67 for their fourth loss to open the season. The Roadrunners were led in scoring once again by Maazin Butler (19), Eural Black had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Josh Rolls-Tyson finished with 11 points. Captain, and starting off-guard Tyler Randolph was sidelined for this game due to an injury vs Mendocino the previous night.

This tournament seemed like “Ground Hog Day” for the Roadrunners as they lost two tough games down to the wire once again; and in the same fashion. These first four games the Runners have had the lead at halftime only to play portions of the second half poorly and fail to execute down the stretch at either end of the floor especially on key situations. However, as tough as these losses have been, they are not down and they are looking forward to a solid week of practice striving to improve and prepare for their 2011-2012 home opener in the 5th Ray Morgan Company and Reich Company Classic this Thanksgiving weekend. The Runners open with a vastly improved Marin College at 8PM, Friday, November 25, and again Saturday, November 26, at 4PM vs College of the Alameda. Come out and support the Roadrunners as they pursue their first wins of the season!

LAS POSITAS TOURNAMENT: 11/10-12/2011

Butte College 60 (0-1) - Contra Costa College 67   Opening Round, Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011

The Roadrunners opened their season at the Las Positas Tournament against a solid Contra Costa team and lost a hard fought contest in the waning minutes 67-60. Up at half-time 34-30, the Runners let their lead slip away and Contra Costa was able to push a lead out to 51-42 with around 10 minutes left. The Runners fought back to 60-63 with 18 seconds to play, had the ball, but failed to score again, and were handed a loss in their season opener. The Roadrunners were led in scoring by Maazin Butler (23) and Tyler Randolph (10)

Butte College 63 (0-2) - Travis AFB 68: Consolation Round Friday, Nov. 11, 2011

The next day the Roadrunners played in the consolation bracket against a veteran group of former college players for Travis Air Force Base. The Roadrunners got off to a good start and let a 28-13 early lead dwindle to 32-28 by halftime. Travis AFB came out red-hot at the start of the second half and finally took the lead at 47-45 with 9 minutes to play. Through some strong efforts the Runners were able to battle back from a late game 7 point deficit to tie the score at 62 all with under a minute to play and had the ball! However, their shot to take the lead rimmed out and Travis was able to secure the win at the foul line down the last few seconds! The Roadrunners were led in scoring by Masson Prowse (18), Eural Black (16, and 10 rebounds)), and Maazin Butler (15).

Despite the tough losses the Las Positas Tourney provided the Roadrunners some solid play and they learned a lot about where they are and where they need to improve. The Roadrunners return to action this week on Thursday against the host team, Mendocino College, at the Mendocino College Invitational Tournament. With a good week of practice and hopefully the return of front-line starters 6’8” Josh Rolls-Tyson, and 6’5” Tearance Edwards, the Roadrunners will get on the right track!
