Campus Map

Butte College is located between Chico and Oroville.  You can reach the college by taking Pentz-Durham Road from Highway 99 or Clark Road off Highway 70.  Once on campus, the AHPS building is located next to Parking Lot 4.

Time

The Fire Academy meets Monday through Friday 7 AM - 4 PM. Some weekends are required.

27 semester units & .5 unit of Critical Skills Workshop

$ 600 Uniforms and physical training clothes (approx.)
$ 220 Wildland & structural gloves, structural boots, turnout suspenders, structural hood, hose strap and stethoscope (approx.) These items will be required.

The fees DO NOT include living expenses

Out of state students will be charged $180 per unit above the initial fee.  Financial Aid (530-895-2311) and/or Veteran's benefits (530-895-2566) may be available through Butte College for qualified students.
Certification

The Fire Academy conforms to standards for certification by the California Board of Fire Services.  Upon successful completion, the student is eligible for certification as an NREMT and is academically qualified for state certification as a Fire Fighter I, as well as certifications for CDF Basic Fire Fighter, HazMat FRO, Low Angle Rescue, Swift Water Rescue Awareness, Confined Space Rescue Awareness, Vehicle Extrication - Basic Techniques, Fire Control 3, Rapid Intervention Crew Tactics, Terrorism Consequence Management, and ICS 100 - 200.

Application Process

All applicants will be required to:

  1. Complete the Pre-Enrollment application and return it with:
    • A copy of your Reading and English assessement scores if test is taken at another college OR a copy of your college diploma. (Reading Level IV and English Level III is mandatory. Testing will be waived with an AA/AS or higher degree.)
  2. Complete the Butte College Enrollment Application available at http://www.butte.edu/services/student/recruitment/seven_step.html
  3. Attend one mandatory Fire Academy orientation. Dates listed below.
  4. Complete a personal history packet, which must include a copy of your High School Diploma / GED. (Distributed after above qualifications have been met.)
  5. At a designated date all qualified applicants will be entered into a lottery.
    The first 50 students will:
    • Complete the provided medical packet, including a doctor's release.
    • Show evidence of a current (throughout the Academy) CPR certification. This CPR card includes: Adult 1 & 2 Rescuer CPR, Child & Infant CPR, Adult, Child & Infant Obstructed Airway Maneuvers. The American Heart Association Health Care Provider (or equivalent) is the suggested source.
    • Pay fees on or before designated date.

Uniforms

All participants will be required to wear the Butte College Fire Academy uniform.  Details will be sent to those who are accepted.
Housing

There is no housing on campus.  Chico State's Craig Hall dormitory www.craighall.com and special housing (houses & apartments) are available to Butte College students (800-559-1393). A listing of off campus housing can be found at www.butte.och101.com
Transportation
 

There will be some off campus training.  Cadets are responsible for their own transportation (up to a 45 minute drive/ride-along program).  There will be NO EXCEPTIONS.

Learning disabilities will not disqualify you from entering this academy.  However, it is your responsibility to contact Disabled Student Services at 530-895-2455 (identify yourself as a Fire Academy student) well in advance of the start of the Academy.  Any time spent away from the classroom regarding this matter will not be acceptable.

An individual requiring a specific accommodation should contact the Fire Academy as soon as possible, but no later than 30 days prior to the start of class.
Orientation

The mandatory Fire Academy orientation will cover what will be expected of you physically, mentally, and academically. Fire Academy procedures as well as a tour of the Fire Training Grounds will be included in this 3 hour presentation.

We also encourage students who are thinking about a career in the fire service or who are planning to attend a future session of the Academy to attend.  Our intention is for the potential candidate to be well informed and prepared for a successful experience at our Fire Academy. **Family members are encouraged to attend**

There is no fee for this orientation.

Important Dates To Remember

Mandatory Orientation Dates: October 24 , 2008 OR November 8, 2008
Personal History Packets will be sent to those who qualify on November 12 , 2008
Personal History Packets must be returned by December 5 , 2008
Lottery results with acceptance packet will be mailed by December 10 , 2008
Must complete Butte College registration by January 6, 2009
Fees must be paid by January 9, 2009
Medical Packet & CPR card due by January 9, 2009

Failure of mail or courier services to deliver documents on time does not excuse the deadline.
