Butte College Butte College is located between Chico and Oroville. You can reach the college by taking Pentz-Durham Road from Highway 99 or Clark Road off Highway 70. Once on campus, the AHPS building is located next to Parking Lot 4. |

HazMat Technology consists of modular courses designed to provide participants with basic and advanced emergency response techniques, general site safety, and annual refresher training. Participants will be awarded semester units and a certificate from Butte College upon successful completion. Most courses also receive a certificate from California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI), the California State Fire Marshall (CSFM). HazMat instructors meet vocational requirements for California Community College faculty. Many are full time public safety employees who respond to hazardous materials incidents. Instructors are certified by one or more of the State agencies: CSTI, CSFM, and/ or California Commission on Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST). |

| Hazardous Materials Courses | |
Information to identify confined spaces and permit-required confined spaces, evaluate hazardous atmospheres, determine adequate levels of personal protection, techniques needed for hazard mitigation, identify basic operational positions, understand responsibilities set by CAL-OSHA, and prepare for confined space rescue operations. A CSFM certified course.
Appropriate response concepts and procedures, safe containment, protective actions and the Incident Command System are summarized. FRO is designed to meet State regulations for EMS, fire, and law enforcement personnel first on the scene to a hazardous materials incident. A CSTI certified course.
A condensed review of the First Responder Operational course designed as an annual refresher module for those who will be responding on-scene to a haz mat incident. A CSTI certified course.
FRO upgrade addresses the response concepts, appropriate actions, and protective equipment involved in decontamination. The Incident Command System components are summarized as related to an incident decontamination team. Provides student with knowledge and skill to respond in a safe manner as part of a hazardous materials decontamination team. A CSTI certified course.
An intense introduction to the nature and behavior of inorganic and organic chemicals. This course examines various laws of chemistry as they apply to organic compounds, flammable liquids and gases, and other types of hazardous materials. A CSTI certified Course.
An application of the information covered in Technician IA. Provides the technical foundation for specific operational strategies, field monitoring and detection devices with and emphasis placed on the safety associated with working around chemicals. A CSTI certified course.
A study of the legal, organizational, technical, and practical aspects of response to hazardous materials emergencies including the laws and regulations related to hazardous materials, the use of the Incident Command System, and protective actions, clothing, and equipment. Examines the Hazardous Materials Group in depth and the positions are exercised in a practical evaluation scenario. A CSTI certified course.
General Site Worker/ Technician is designed for individuals involved in daily activities with hazardous materials and/or waste as defined under OSHA standards Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations Section I9I0.I20. This course examines hazard identification and assessment, protective action options, the role and appropriate response of personnel, health and safety issues, the Incident Command System, and decontamination.
Provides students with a review of hazardous waste site operations to ensure that they maintain their skill to recognize potential hazards and the ability to perform their duties with minimal risk to their safety and health as defined under 29 CFR Section I9I0.I20.
This course is
designed to provide awareness of the potential hazards associated with
aircraft crashes or ground fires involving aircraft. Outlining the
needs and concerns for emergency responders, crash victims and the general
public, this course will benefit anyone who may have to respond to the
scene of an aircraft fire, crash or other incident involving a downed
aircraft. |
