Butte/Yuba MESA Challenge II
Last year student teams from the MESA programs at Butte
College and Yuba College competed for the coveted MESA Cup. The competition
consists of an event each semester. Last fall, the students completed in
the cardboard boat races. Students from the two MESA programs were challenged
to build cardboard boats to travel the length of the swimming pool and back.
The boat must hold 3 people with a minimum weight of 375 lbs. The competition
was in two areas: 1) a time trial and 2) maximum load following a successful
time trial.
Although a number of students got wet, it wasn’t enough to
put a damper on everyone’s fun. Below are some of the pictures from the event.
The objective of the second
competition of last year (held in the spring) was to design, build and launch a water
rocket using a 2-liter plastic bottle. The rockets were designed to carry one grade
AA, non-boiled egg as a payload and return it safely to the ground intact. Students
competed in two groups. One group was allowed to use 1 bottle to house their water,
the second used as many as 3 bottles containing water in series. The competition was
a blast. See pictures below.
The combined results of the MESA Challenge resulted in a resounding
win for the Butte College MESA Team. Butte MESA will keep the MESA cup for the next year.
