“A Path to a Sustainable Future” - Rethinking how we approach the building process and underlying concepts in our design process. The knowledge and the technology are available today to design buildings and whole communities that are at their heart sustainable. It is possible to design buildings and communities that are self-sustaining in terms of energy, water and waste. This presentation will focus on partnering state and federal efforts to further the community college efforts in meeting today’s challenges and will highlight current success and efforts in bridging federal resources with state public education needs including the latest information on the Clinton Climate Initiative. The Butte-Glenn Community College District campus architects will present on the steps on collaboration and integration of program requirements into design elements that will lead the way to designing and building tomorrows classrooms. This presentation will provide an overview of the latest innovations in classrooms for schools and colleges, including layouts and designs, thematic adjacencies, technology advances and learning environments for the best student learning outcomes. In addition, this session will give attendees a preview of the classrooms, schools and colleges educational systems of tomorrow. Collaboration is one of the keys to success in implementing successful sustainability efforts across campuses. This presentation will share the strategies on integrating facilities, instruction, student learning and civic engagement that has established Butte-Glenn Community College District as a national leader in sustainability and will focus on college efforts as signatory of the Presidents Climate Commitment, greenhouse gas inventory findings and strategies on reaching carbon neutrality. This presentation includes construction managers, design professionals and construction attorneys and will cover available methodology in public school construction delivery, including standard bid, multi- prime, GMAX and construction management at risk. This session will discuss practical pros and cons of delivery methods, case studies in successful traditional and non-traditional construction management, and roles and responsibilities of each of the disciplines and professionals involved. Session IV: A Case Study-How do ‘Green’ Buildings REALLY Perform?

This presentation will include the partnership of utilities and colleges from across the state, and will present currently available resources for additional funding for remodels, new construction, energy conservation and energy generation projects at public schools. This session will also include an introduction to the California Community Colleges Board of Governor energy and sustainability policy. This presentation will also review the current status of the CCC/IOU Partnership; discuss the development of the Community College System Sustainability Policy; and highlight the various utility programs available for energy efficient new construction design, climate change, demand response, and self generation. 2:30-4:00 Session I: Collaborative Approach and Pursuing LEED Commercial Interior on a Campus Renovation Project
This presentation will focus upon utilizing a DSA Collaborative Review Process in which architects, engineers, and owners partner with DSA to achieve a successful project approval. We will discuss the phases of design review and coordination, and the steps necessary to ensure the proper level of detail and coordination in the development of designs for public school buildings. Best Practices – Chabot Las Positas Community College District
Jeff Kingston will present the practical experiences, lessons learned and opportunities available for solar projects at schools and colleges. He will share his experiences in planning and implementing the three MW solar projects at Contra Costa Community College District that received $9 million in PG&E incentives and the current planning at Chabot Las Positas Community College District for a two MW solar installation.
