ARE YOU INTERESTED IN CAREER ASSESSMENT?

Are you uncertain about your career goals? Do you wonder what major to choose and what careers you will be qualified to pursue? Do you like so many different things you can’t decide what you like best? Did someone tell you to go take “that career test” and find out what you should do?

If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, you may want to take a career assessment(s). Career assessments help clarify your interests, aptitudes, personality characteristics, and values as they relate to majors and careers. The information is also useful for personal growth and development.

Different assessments provide different types of information. Review the information below and determine which assessment(s) you want to take. The cost for each assessment is listed at the end of the description.

Make sure you read Directions for Taking a Career Assessment before beginning an assessment. After completing your assessment(s) return it (them) to the Career Center for scoring. Make sure you schedule an appointment with the career counselor to review your assessment results and identify “next steps” for your career planning.

INTEREST INVENTORIES

Interest inventories measure your likes and dislikes for school subjects, work activities, hobbies, and occupations. Some assessments compare your responses to the general population and to people in different occupations. The most popular interest inventories are the Strong Interest Inventory (SII, the Career Assessment Inventory (CAI), and the Career Occupational Preference Survey (COPS).

Strong Interest Inventory $10.50

The response format of the SII is Like-Indifferent-Dislike. Responses are compared to the general population and to people in 109 careers. The assessment is based on the assumption that if you have similar likes and dislikes to people who are in an occupation and they are successful in it and like it, then you would be too. Most of the 109 occupations require four or more years of training.

Career Assessment Inventory $10.00

The response format allows for five responses: Like, Like Moderately, Indifferent, Dislike Moderately, and Dislike. Responses are compared to the general population and to people in 111 careers. The assessment is based on the assumption that if you have similar likes and dislikes to people who are in an occupation and they are successful and like it, then you would be too. This assessment includes many occupations that require less than four years of education.

Career Occupation Preference Survey (COPS) $8.75 for the 3 Part System

The response format allows for four types of responses: Like Very Much, Like Moderately, Dislike Moderately, and Dislike Very Much. Responses are compared to the general population to determine strength of interests. Results are organized into 14 occupational clusters. Each cluster presents majors, classes, and skills related to approximately 75 to 100 occupations. Clusters are also organized by length of educational program.

PERSONALITY INVENTORY

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) $12.50

The MBTI is bases on Carl Jung’s theory of personality. It assesses four normal personality dimensions: where you focus your attention and are energized, how you gather information from the world around you, how you make decisions, and what your lifestyle preference is. Results are organized into 16 personality types which are related to careers and majors. The results are also used for personal growth and development, team building, learning and communication style, and leadership development. This assessment is very popular in business and industry.

APTITUDE

An aptitude assessment measures your potential to learn the skills associated with different occupations. If you are uncertain of your skills and abilities or what you do well, you may want to take an aptitude assessment.

CHOICES computer program provides an aptitude assessment that measures five areas: Verbal Comprehension, Numerical Ability, Numerical Reasoning, Space Visualization, and Visual Speed and Accuracy. Ten minutes is allowed for each aptitude. Results are plotted on a graph which can be compared to career aptitude profiles.
